John sounds a little strange

John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. Matthew 3:1-3

John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin, the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth (who Mary visited and to whom the angel, Gabriel, appeared).

John sounds a little strange. However, I think camel’s hair clothes and a leather belt was probably the fashion for men in 30AD, and he was amazingly popular. Crowds of people would come out to hear him speak and teach even though he was out in the middle of nowhere, out in the desert.

The desert wilderness in Scripture is often seen as a deeply spiritual place, a place where God works profoundly in people’s lives. It is seen as a place to reconnect with God.

Do you have a place where you find spiritual peace, the beach, the mountains, a sunrise, a sunset?

A place where you can empty yourself and then ‘fill up’ with the love of God.
