What are your thoughts about serving on the Parish Council?  The St. Pius X parish family has helped and inspired me with my faith journey.  I hope to be able to encourage other young families to get involved and begin renewing their relationship with God – one person at a time, one step at a time.

What interests, hobbies, personal information or ideas would you like to share with the parish family?  Five core values define my life - Faith, Family, Running, Career and Friends.  The road to adopting these core values was not straight, but dotted with challenges, many of which define who I am today.  In 2016, I completed a 90-mile run from Montauk to Plainview to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease.  This year (Nov. 4/5), I will be running 75 miles (Sound to Ocean Run & NYC Marathon).  Over the past year, I have shared my story with numerous individuals and groups throughout the tri-state area with the hope of inspiring others to embrace their faith and strive to be the best person God intended.

  Name:  Carly Kuzma

Hello everyone! My name is Carly Kuzma and I currently study at St. John’s University, where I am completing my final year of study as a Doctor of Pharmacy.

I was born and raised at St. Pius X and am a proud parishioner to this very day. For the past three years I have been a Eucharistic Minister and I am now a new member of the Parish Council.  I am truly honored to be able to serve this parish and would like to thank Father Valentine for encouraging me and entrusting me to take on an such active role to serve. As a new council member, I hope to be a friend you can turn to with any questions, concerns, recommendations etc. regarding the parish or faith in general. Over the past few years my faith has grown significantly and in large part due to my grandparents’ strong faith and example. I believe that the seeds of faith are within us all, but when we come together as a community, we can grow our faith even more and make it that much stronger. This is what I aspire to do as a member of the Parish Council!

My faith has guided me throughout my life and led me to exactly where I believe I am supposed to be. I feel truly blessed to be a part of such an amazing parish and am eternally grateful. I hope to get to know everyone more personally and to continue to make St. Pius X a home for us all!

Name:  Phil Saglimbene

Occupation:  Engineer (Retired)

Parishioner since:  1985

Organizations within the parish with which you currently are affiliated:   Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight), Parish Council, Resident “Carpenter” for Fr. Valentine

What are your thoughts about serving on the Parish Council?  Never impressed with the clergy and the way the parish was managed, our participation at St Pius X diminished after our children finished Faith Formation. In the early 2000’s, I met Msgr. Graziado and he helped me revitalize my faith.  With his encouragement, I joined the Knights of Columbus which enhanced my faith and increased my spiritual and social activity in the parish. Currently, I am in my 4th term as Grand Knight for our Parish’s Knights of Columbus Council.  In addition, I became an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion this past spring.  A few months ago, Fr. Valentine approached me and ask me to join the Parish Council.  I had no idea what the position entailed or what the responsibilities would/will be, but I knew from the different areas I had managed throughout out my professional career, I would learn and I would adapt to fulfill this position.

What interests, hobbies, personal information or ideas would you like to share with the parish family?  I worked in the Water and Wastewater field for NYC Department of Environmental Protection for 36 years.  I am married to my wife Connie for 39 years and we have been blessed with two children, Melissa (her husband Robert) and Philip (his wife Jessica).  Both couples were married at St Pius X.  Melissa and Robert have blessed us with two wonderful grandchildren Ryan (7) and Victoria (3) - both baptized at St. Pius X.

My hobbies … well I am a diehard Automotive Enthusiast & enjoy working on my cars and going to driving events where I drive my cars on race tracks.  Today the cars have taken a backseat.  In my free time, I enjoy activities with my family, especially our grandchildren.   AND … as an Italian, I love to eat and I love to laugh!

Name:  Salvatore Spano

Occupation: First Senior Vice President, NYCB

Parishioner since:  1966

Organizations within the parish with which you currently are affiliated:  Choir, Cantor, Feast & Festival Committee, Parish Council, Pastoral Associate

What are your thoughts about serving on the Parish Council?  When asked by Fr. Valentine to be the Chairman of the Parish Council, I eagerly accepted as way to help council members and all parishioners encounter Christ and especially to live out the motto of our patron saint, “Restore All Things In Christ”.  I want to help council members develop their spirituality and enrich their understanding of the faith so that the counsel they provide to Fr. Valentine is rooted in the mission of the Church.

After attending religious education classes and making my Confirmation, I, like many, became a lapsed Catholic. Then after coming to Mass one Easter Sunday, I never left and began to attend Mass weekly. While at Mass, I heard a plea for Catechists, always wanting to be a teacher, I answered the call. This ministry would be one of my many gifts to St. Pius X Parish as I taught Confirmation grades for over 25 years.  I was then “tapped on the shoulder” by our Music Director Teresa Arrigo to be in the Choir.  Once again, I accepted and became the only cantor at all liturgical celebrations for over 25 years.  I then went to the “wrong meeting” and became part of the Liturgy Committee and would later assume the role of Liturgical Coordinator to prepare liturgies, train liturgical ministers, and create the liturgical environment.  Additionally, I have served as Co-Chair of the Feast of St. Pius X since 1990 and enjoy being able to bring Italian specialties and recipes that I find on my frequent trips to Italy to the community.

What interests, hobbies, personal information or ideas would you like to share with the parish family?  I enjoy traveling, preparing Italian specialties, and of course great classical music.
